OUR HISTORY
The story of how decades of signal processing research became the foundation for next-generation electronic warfare protection.
Archaius started with an innovative signal-processing research idea that grew into a next-generation platform to protect autonomous systems in some of the most contested environments.
Founded by Dr. Frederick “Rick” Vosburgh as Archaius Labs, the organization aimed to solve the core challenges of GPS-denied navigation. Through years of research and engineering, the team refined Smart Electronic Protection Antennas (SEPA) technology, pushing the limits of what is possible at scale.
In 2025, with the technology proven and demand increasing, Archaius transitioned from a research lab into a full-scale defense technology company.
Key Milestones
Early Years
The Foundation: Archaius Labs
Dr. Frederick "Rick" Vosburgh, a pioneering signal processing researcher with decades of experience pushing the boundaries in adaptive beamforming and phased array systems, founded Archaius Labs to develop innovative methods for electronic warfare protection.
Based in Research Triangle Park, an area rich with top universities and defense innovation, Rick built a small team of PhD-level researchers to address the key challenges preventing small, energy-efficient anti-jamming systems from being used on autonomous platforms.
2022-2024
The Breakthrough: SEPA Technology
Years of dedicated R&D led to a breakthrough: the Smart Electronic Protection Antennas (SEPA) architecture. This proprietary innovation enabled miniature antenna arrays to offer significantly greater jamming resistance than legacy CRPA systems, while consuming less than 2 watts of power and fitting into an 8 x 12 cm footprint.
The Archaius Labs team secured SBIR contracts and validated the technology with Department of Defense stakeholders. Field testing with elite units demonstrated unprecedented capabilities: autonomous threat detection, real-time nulling, and 2°-geolocation of jammers, capabilities previously thought impossible at scale.
The technology proved successful. What started as academic research evolved into a mission-critical capability that the warfighter urgently needed.
2025-Present
The Evolution: Archaius Inc.
In 2025, Archaius Labs restructured into Archaius Inc., marking a significant milestone in the company’s growth.
Founder Dr. Rick Vosburgh appointed James Upson as the new CEO, positioning the organization for its next phase of expansion. James, a retired U.S. Army Special Forces officer, brought operational insight and strategic clarity to Archaius's mission. Under his leadership, the company sharpened its long-term vision, secured top-tier investments, and expanded its reach across both public and private markets.
At the end of 2025, Rick stepped down from his active role as CTO, paving the way for Charlie Wilson, Ph.D., the lead engineer and the mind behind Archaius’ cutting-edge signal-processing technologies, to take the CTO role.
The new leadership team combines deep technical expertise with real-world operational experience, guiding Archaius into its next chapter.
